At Grand Rapids' Knapp Charter Academy, we believe great schools develop both a student’s heart and mind. Our moral focus program is designed to support our parents' efforts to teach character at home by reinforcing and modeling universal human virtues, such as compassion, respect, and integrity. A different virtue is featured each month of the school year and is supported by curriculum in the classroom. Elementary and middle school students more readily absorb the true meaning of character qualities when they are presented in the context of everyday life.
Using virtues consistently must be intentionally taught. Our staff focuses on the virtue of the month during morning meetings and dedicates time each week to discussion and instruction in the classroom. Each month, one of our grades takes on the responsibility of presenting the moral focus at our assembly. This may include a skit, song, or a reading that exemplifies that month's moral focus. we also honor many of our elementary and middle school students for exemplifying virtuous and academically-focused behavior during our monthly assemblies. Parents are welcome and encouraged to participate in keeping our community focused on these expectations.
